Our Story
Hello everyone!! I’m Jessica, the owner of Sweet Southern Farms along with my husband, Travis, and our two boys, James and Jason. We are a small family farm in Edgemoor, SC, which is right outside of Rock Hill where we were both born and raised. Our property has been in my family since the mid-40s. We own roughly 25 of the total 80 acres. My family originally, like many others during their time, used the land to raise animals not only for meat that they processed themselves in barns that they built by hand but also for milk and other dairy products. Huge acreage gardens were grown to feed the family and the excess produce was canned to eat throughout the winter months. The multitude of skills that were second nature to these generations have slowly diminished over the years. The animals dwindled down on the property and the gardens became much smaller to eventually none. The fences and barns weren’t maintained and the fields grew up to mostly woods.
Our family moved onto the property in 2014 with huge goals in mind. We planned to grow each year with animals, produce, products, skills, and knowledge. However, doing these things are no overnight task. It takes time, money, and resources. Thankfully I was taught the basic skills of farming growing up and with the help of my parents and grandparents’ knowledge and guidance, we could hit the ground running.
It’s been 10 years, and we still have a ton of work ahead of us to get where we’d like to be. But we have learned so much along the way. Some things we’ve learned the hard way. As we grow and learn, we hope to pass along tips and insights to those wanting to do the same as us. To those that are wanting to start a garden, raise animals, become more self-sufficient and hands on with how our food is grown and made. It will open your eyes as it has ours on the differences between store bought and home-grown. You can follow along with our journey on Facebook and Instagram.
